Welcome to the October 2014 Newsletter.

The hybrid cloud and Software-defined networking (SDN) were two of the most talked about technologies at the recent IP EXPO, and both feature in this month’s newsletter. Last week Avere surveyed 200 cloud and storage professionals at the 2014 Cloud Expo and 2014 Amazon Web Services (AWS) Summit, both held in New York, and found that over half were already building a hybrid infrastructure for their organisation."The reality is that most organisations today are straddling between on-premises and public cloud solutions as they look to implement their cloud strategies," said Rebecca Thompson, vp of marketing at Avere Systems.

The hybrid cloud can, in theory, offer the best of both worlds, delivering the benefits of the cloud without the need to completely reinvent the existing IT infrastructure. This is explored in greater detail by Atchison Frazer of KEMP Technologies this month as he outlines the challenges and advantages that the hybrid cloud can offer virtual infrastructure admins, with a particular emphasis on the role of the virtual load balancer.

Software-defined networking is often discussed in tandem with all things cloud, and this month SDN is represented by two insightful pieces from Emulex and Avaya. For Emulex the uptake of cloud computing will result in “data centres with extremely dense virtual environments, provisioning services to departments in minutes instead of hours, and this will require a software-defined architecture.” Jean Turgeon, head of networking and chief technologist at Avaya explores the role of SDN in the data centre further, explaining why data centre managers will be looking at SDN deployment in the very near future - if they haven’t done so already. With the market set to be worth more than $3.7bn within two years according to IDC there’s never been a better time to get ahead of the SDN curve.
